Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom Statement on UC Berkeley Chancellor's Task Force on Academics and Athletics

I applaud UC Berkeley Chancellor Nicholas Dirks' leadership in taking a meaningful look at the state of affairs of our student athletes. This report represents an important first step in creating an academics-first model for these and all students in our universities. I fully support the Task Force recommendations that will foster cultural integration of student athletes on campus, address the need to move away from an "athlete only" admissions process, and evaluate an appropriate way to approach academic incentives for athletic contracts, including coaches and athletic directors.

But we cannot stop there. Now is the time to move toward strict enforcement of the NCAA 20 hour a week practice rule; offer four-year, full cost of education scholarships; and provide stipends.

With the implementation of these measures, UC Berkeley and the State of California can lead the way as we often do. I look forward to working with the Chancellor in the creation of a model athletic contract that includes aggressive academic benchmarks for athletes and administrators alike. Together, I know we can strengthen our academic core and provide our athletes with the education they deserve.
