Lt. Governor Joins Read Across America Day at Sacramento Kindergarten

(Sacramento) - California Lieutenant Governor Gavin Newsom will read Dr. Seuss' Cat in the Hat to a Sacramento Kindergarten class on Monday, in conjunction with the National Education Association's "Read Across America Day."

"We are excited to see Lieutenant Governor Newsom and so many others across California celebrate Read Across America Day with young children to promote early literacy skills," said Deborah Kong, president of Early Edge California. "Research shows that children who do not read proficiently by 3rd grade are four times more likely to leave school without a diploma. In California we must continue to invest in quality early learning programs that equip our children with skills, like early literacy, that will set them on the path to success."

Lt. Governor Newsom will present a proclamation honoring Auto Club Speedway, recognizing the facility's significant economic role in California's Inland Empire. The NASCAR Auto Club 400 race weekend generates over $100 million in economic activity for the local economy and the Auto Club Speedway has an annual economic impact of $136 million to $220 million, supporting local jobs and the region's small businesses.

As Mayor of San Francisco, Gavin Newsom recognized the unequivocal science and data demonstrating the benefits of early child learning, and implemented a Preschool for All (PFA) system citywide in 2008. Six years later, the State of California followed San Francisco's lead by committing to provide pre-Kindergarten opportunities for every low-income child in the state, in a phased-in multi-year rollout.

NEA's Read Across America is an annual reading motivation and awareness program that calls for every child in every community to celebrate reading on March 2, the birthday of beloved children's author Dr. Seuss.
