State of the State Introduction: Prepared Remarks of Lt. Governor Gavin Newsom

"In this house, we are in the employ of the most diverse people on earth, representing every possible color, creed, and community. That diversity, in the words of the late State Librarian Kevin Starr, is "the persistent DNA code of California."

"And perhaps, more than at any other time in our state's history, that denomination we too often take for granted holds urgent significance.

"Californians stand on the shoulders of giants and geniuses, and now the world's best hope for a more effective, optimistic, inclusive way forward. A nation-state antidote to the vitriol and vindictiveness that is infecting our federal politics.

"We have always been unafraid to lead and in the last few months we have announced repeatedly, emphatically, that we are unafraid to fight.

"Because what's at stake isn't just our policies. It's our people. It's our engine of prosperity. It's the fundamental promise that no matter your language or last name, there is a place of ascent on the ladder for you.

"Which is why the California contrast must keep shining brighter than ever. Defined not by carnage, but courage. Opportunity for all. Discrimination against none. Progress based on evidence, not alternative facts. And powered by the limitless passion and genuine populism demonstrated not just on the Washington Mall on Friday but by the millions on Saturday, peacefully marching on our cities' streets; stepping up, speaking out and demanding to be heard.

"It is not much of an exaggeration to say that the eyes of the world are upon us and the dreams of future generations in many ways depend on us. This challenge falls to all of you: the exact right people at the exact right time. And in particular, the exact right Governor.

"Around 50 years ago, in the face of systemic inequality and prejudice, Bobby Kennedy reminded us that what the "world demands is the qualities of youth; not a time of life but a state of mind, a temper of the will, a quality of the imagination, a predominance of courage over timidity, of the appetite for adventure over the love of ease."

"At this hinge moment of history - political, demographic, economic, and technological - California is blessed to be led by a Governor who, regardless of the calendar's progression, has always embodied those qualities, regardless of his time of life.

"Ladies and Gentlemen, Governor Edmund G. Brown Junior."
