STATEMENT: Lt. Governor Newsom on expansion of access to leave time for new parents in California

SAN FRANCISCO - California Lt. Governor Gavin Newsom issued the following statement on Governor Brown's decision to sign Senate Bill 63 (Jackson), which expands 12 weeks of unpaid, job-protected maternity and paternity leave to Californians who work for smaller employers of 20 or more:

"I applaud Governor Brown and Senator Jackson's leadership on this important step to expand access to parental leave in California. New mothers and fathers should never be forced to choose between keeping their job and spending time with their newborn child during those first critical months of a newborn's life. With over eighty-percent of brain development occurring in a child's first three years, parental leave isn't a 'nice to have'; it's a 'must have'."
