Lt. Governor Gavin Newsom met with Heather Humphreys TD, Ireland Minister for Business, Enterprise, & Innovation


On March 16, 2018, Lt. Governor Newsom met with Heather Humphreys TD, Minister for Business, Enterprise and Innovation, of the Republic of Ireland ("Ireland").

During the meeting, which lasted an hour, Lt. Governor Newsom and Ms. Humphreys TD discussed:

  • The Minister's visit and itinerary;
  • The economies of Ireland and California, demographics, and investments in higher education;
  • Marriage equality;
  • Immigration policies and the Irish origins of San Francisco's "Sanctuary" ordinance;
  • Trade and the natural partnership between Ireland and the U.S. West Coast;
  • Climate change policies, conservation, and the unique role and leadership of sub-national governments following President Trump's decision to withdraw the U.S. from the Paris Climate Accord;
  • Ireland's objectives in the United Kingdom's negotiated exit the European Union;
  • Homelessness and policy solutions in Ireland and California;
  • Healthcare funding and service delivery in Ireland and California;
  • Irish communities in San Francisco and their histories;
  • Emerging and future economies and workforce displacement.
