STATEMENT: Lt. Governor Newsom on CSU's Announcement to Forgo Tuition Hikes for Next Year

(SACRAMENTO) - Lt. Governor and California State University Trustee Gavin Newsom issued the following statement regarding CSU Chancellor Timothy White's decision to abandon proposals of increasing tuition for the upcoming academic year:

"I welcome Chancellor White's leadership. The cost of attendance, from housing to food, creates significant cost pressures on families and in turn, limits the state's ability to provide the workforce and opportunity that our economy demands. Piling new fees onto the burden when the state is looking at a $6 billion surplus is difficult to excuse.

"I urge the University of California to follow suit and for both segments to work with the legislature on a longer-term funding agreement so that we're not repeating the same stand-off and uncertainty this time next year."
