SACRAMENTO – Lieutenant Governor Eleni Kounalakis issued the following statement today regarding the proposed tuition increase before the University of California Regents:

“I was disappointed to learn that the University of California is proposing a tuition increase at this week’s UC Regents meeting. The recently released 2020-2021 state budget proposed by the Governor includes a generous $217.7 million (nearly 6 percent) increase in the University of California’s budget allocation. During a time of record economic growth in our state, it is incomprehensible that we would consider further raising the cost of tuition for our students. While I commend the UC for working to increase the predictability of the cost of a UC education, predictability should not come at the expense of affordability.

I look forward to working with my colleagues on the Board of Regents and UC staff to explore alternative ways to meet the goals of the University of California without placing additional burdens on the backs of California students.”
