Lieutenant Governor Kounalakis Statement on Nomination of Martin J. Jenkins to the California Supreme Court

SACRAMENTO – Lieutenant Governor Eleni Kounalakis released the following statement today in response to Governor Gavin Newsom nominating Justice Martin J. Jenkins for Associate Justice of the California Supreme Court:

“Justice Martin J. Jenkins is a historic choice by Governor Newsom. I’m proud to know Marty – he will be a great California Supreme Court justice for all Californians.”

A native of San Francisco, Jenkins was previously an Associate Justice of the California Court of Appeal for the First District, located in San Francisco, and a judge of the United States District Court for the Northern District of California. Jenkins currently serves as Judicial Appointments Secretary for Governor Newsom.

Eleni Kounalakis is the 50th lieutenant governor of California and the first woman elected to the position. From 2010 to 2013, Kounalakis served as President Barack Obama’s Ambassador to the Republic of Hungary. In 2019, Governor Gavin Newsom designated Kounalakis as his Representative for International Affairs and Trade Development, and as Chair of the corresponding Interagency Committee that oversees the state’s trade, investment and international relations. Kounalakis also serves on the three-member State Lands Commission, and as a voting member of the University of California Board of Regents, the California State University Board of Trustees, and the California Community Colleges Board of Governors.
