Lieutenant Governor Eleni Kounalakis has been a passionate champion for climate action, environmental stewardship, and environmental justice. As Chair of the State Lands Commission and a member of both the California Coastal Commission and Ocean Protection Council, she has led efforts to decommission oil drilling operations and accelerate the shift to clean, renewable technologies like offshore wind. Committed to helping frontline communities and preserving California’s natural beauty, she has worked to address critical public health issues caused by pollution, ensuring a healthier future for all Californians.
Climate Action and Clean Energy
Lieutenant Governor Kounalakis has strongly advocated for sustainability, including supporting initiatives to reduce carbon emissions and advancing clean energy technologies. She supports policies that encourage investment in renewable energy, protect natural resources, and promote environmental stewardship.




Tijuana River Cleanup
Lieutenant Governor Kounalakis has been a steadfast advocate for addressing the environmental and public health crisis posed by pollution in the Tijuana River. She has championed efforts to secure funding and implement policies that not only clean up the river but also prevent future contamination, protecting both local ecosystems and the well-being of nearby communities.
State Lands Commission
The Commission manages 4 million acres of tide and submerged lands and nearly half a million acres in the desert and Sierra Nevada Mountains. Under her leadership, the commission has removed legacy oil infrastructure, capped old oil wells, supported a portfolio of renewable energy projects, and is working with the California Energy Commission to bring offshore wind energy to California. The Commission has also worked with ports to address supply chain challenges and fought to restore and protect critical natural habitats for California’s rich biodiversity.
