Overview
As Governor Newsom’s Representative for International Affairs and Trade Development, Lieutenant Governor Eleni Kounalakis has led in advancing California’s position as a respected and significant player in subnational international relations. A former United States Ambassador, she has consistently championed California’s interests and values on the global stage.
Lieutenant Governor Kounalakis has led delegations to Mexico, India, Japan, and Scotland to expand and strengthen California’s economy – the fifth largest in the world – and promote California’s globally recognized leadership on climate change and environmental justice, stewardship, and sustainability. She has interacted continuously with the foreign consular corps and the diplomatic community based in California and has welcomed and met with numerous foreign heads of state, governors, ministers, ambassadors, and trade delegations. She has worked to attract foreign investment and to open foreign markets for California companies in order to create more good, high-wage jobs, has championed California’s support for the immigrant communities that help to power our economy, and has emphasized with our foreign partners the importance of implementing policies that respect and embrace workers’ rights, human rights, democracy, and the rule of law.
Strengthening Trade Relations
Lieutenant Governor Kounalakis has led numerous trade missions to strengthen California’s economic ties with key global markets. She has focused on expanding opportunities for California businesses, particularly in the technology, agriculture, and renewable energy sectors, ensuring that the state remains a leader in the global economy.
Climate and Environmental Diplomacy
Leveraging California’s leadership in climate action, Lieutenant Governor Kounalakis has engaged with international partners to promote sustainable practices and share California’s innovations in clean energy. Her efforts have included participating in global forums and advocating for climate agreements that align with California’s ambitious environmental goals.
