February 2025 Round-Up

As we close out the month of February, I want to take a moment to reflect on the rich history and vibrant diversity that make our state so special. This month, we celebrated Black History Month—a time to honor the generations of Black leaders, activists, artists, and trailblazers who have shaped California’s history and continue to inspire progress today. From the civil rights movement to advancements in education, business, and public service, Black Californians have been at the heart of our state’s fight for justice and equality.

We also welcomed the Lunar New Year, a time of renewal, reflection, and celebration for our AAPI communities. California is home to the largest Asian American and Pacific Islander population in the country, and their contributions—from innovation and entrepreneurship to culture and public service—have enriched every corner of our state.

This month has also been marked by challenges, including the devastating Los Angeles fires, which have displaced families and impacted communities. My heart is with everyone affected, and I want to assure you that California remains steadfast in our commitment to rebuilding, providing resources, and supporting those in need. We will continue working together to ensure our communities are safe, resilient, and prepared for the future.

Despite the hardships we face, I remain deeply hopeful. California has always been a place of resilience, innovation, and progress. As we move forward, let’s continue to uplift one another and work toward a brighter future for all.

With optimism and determination,

Assessing the Aftermath: Eaton Fire Damage & Debris Cleanup Efforts

In February, I joined officials from CalEPA, FEMA, CalOES, and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to assess the ongoing cleanup efforts and recovery process for communities impacted by the Eaton Fire in LA County. This devastating wildfire burned more than 14,000 acres, destroyed nearly 9,500 structures, and tragically claimed 17 lives.

With debris removal well underway, we are working alongside federal, state, and local partners to help families rebuild. I also toured two fire-damaged elementary schools to see firsthand how cleanup efforts are progressing and discuss next steps for recovery. The road ahead won’t be easy, but California remains committed to ensuring our communities can heal and rebuild stronger. For resources and updates, visit ca.gov/LAFires.

Black-Serving Institutions Designation Kick-Off at CSU Dominguez Hills

This Black History Month, I was proud to join CSU Chancellor Mildred García, CSU Dominguez Hills President Dr. Thomas Parham, Senator Steven Bradford, and other leaders to celebrate a historic step forward for Black student success in California. With the implementation of SB 1348, our state is now the first in the nation to establish a Black-Serving Institution designation, recognizing colleges and universities dedicated to advancing Black student achievement. As Chair of the Board for Black-Serving Institutions, I am committed to ensuring this designation drives real change by addressing systemic barriers and expanding opportunities for Black students. Education is the key to economic mobility, and California is leading the way in building a more equitable future.

Campus Visit to CSU Northridge

I visited California State University, Northridge (CSUN) to engage with students, faculty, and campus leaders shaping the future of higher education. I toured the Assistive Technology Engineering Center (ATEC), set to open in summer 2025, which aims to bridge equity gaps in STEM by providing high-tech labs and cutting-edge resources. I also met with student leaders to discuss key issues like financial aid, housing, mental health, and career pathways in entertainment.

CSUN is a leader in fostering student success, and their Entertainment Industry Initiative is a testament to the university’s commitment to creating real-world opportunities for students pursuing careers in film, media, and the arts. As Lieutenant Governor and a member of California’s higher education governing boards, I remain dedicated to advocating for affordable housing, student resources, and workforce development to ensure all students can pursue their dreams.

California Energy Commission’s Offshore Wind Symposium

This month, I joined California Energy Commission (CEC) Chair David Hochschild and Port of Long Beach CEO Mario Cordero for an Offshore Wind Symposium to discuss how California can harness offshore wind to power our clean energy future. Hosted by the CEC and the Port of Long Beach, the event brought together industry leaders, policymakers, and community members to explore the critical role ports will play in launching this industry and creating good-paying union jobs.

California is committed to building 25 gigawatts of offshore wind by 2045—enough to power millions of homes and reduce reliance on fossil fuels. Investing in port infrastructure and workforce development will ensure our state remains at the forefront of clean energy innovation. With nearly 80% of Californians supporting offshore wind, we remain committed to creating a healthier, more sustainable future for all.

Rancho Mirage Writers Festival’s Foreign Policy Panel

This month, I had the opportunity to join a distinguished panel alongside General David Petraeus, Max Boot, and Ambassador Ivo Daalder for a foreign policy discussion moderated by Bret Stephens. Our conversation focused on the rise of illiberal democracy and the potential challenges facing U.S. foreign policy, particularly in a second Trump administration. We explored the implications for global alliances, security, and democratic institutions, as well as the role of climate policy in international relations. As California’s Lieutenant Governor and former U.S. Ambassador, I remain committed to strengthening democratic values and ensuring our state continues to lead on the global stage.

Lunar New Year Celebration

California’s strength lies in its diversity, and our AAPI communities are a vital part of our state’s identity. I was honored to join California Asian American and Pacific Islander Legislative Caucus, the API Legislative Caucus Institute, and the California Commission on API American Affairs to celebrate Lunar New Year and recognize the contributions of AAPI Californians. With 16% of our state’s population identifying as AAPI—compared to just 6% nationwide—our voices and civic engagement matter more than ever. With 11 AAPI legislators serving in Sacramento, we continue to build a more inclusive and representative government that empowers AAPI voices across California.
